OK, I realize I just posted an image of the missing image issue, which may result in in a missing image which will not illustrate the missing image issue I'm seeing.

austin_powers_crosseyed.jpg

Kinja'd!!!

If I open the post to edit, I can see the images. If I go to my home page, I can see all the lead thumbnails. Just nothing anywhere else.

Update:

Kinja'd!!!

Within the last week, Kinja has started using the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! service to host photos. I started noticing it when some images on Jalopnik and it's whitenoise forum (oppositelock). It has since moved to the other sites.

Here's the problem. Some professional networks are possibly confused or consider this site a personal storage/cloud service, and is blocking them. From what I understand, images are routed through the site for resizing. Here is an example of both URLs.

URL before Cloudinary

URL after Cloudinary

I'm wondering who else is affected by this? If you have write access to other subforums, could you please share this? I'm curious how many daytime readers Gawker will lose once they realize all the images drop?

It's only the images in the main post on Jalopnik and Oppo. All images in replies are good.

We'll have to wait and see. I was only experiencing these issues on a fed.gov network.

I won't be back in that environment until Jan 6.

Ernie, WTF is up with these URLs?

This new prefix (bold) has been added to images in Jalopnik and Oppo (which I call Jaloppo).

http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/i… http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/19advvgqqv… . jpg

edit - I was just directed to http://cloudinary.com/ when I tried to hit the i.kinja-img.com site.

Great.. Some users were discussing that the other day.

Seeing that it's on only on Jaloppo, it seems that it's being tested. I hope it's just a test, and it's not rolled out. That's a lot of users on a lot of networks will find all the Gawker sites useless.

There are some bugs we're smoothing out with that new service. Ideally, it will be a great help, as we're already noticing it processing images and gifs more reliably than our current processor. Aside from the URL being blocked on certain networks, what other troubles has it caused?

Kinja'd!!! McMike > Ernie @ Kinja
12/27/2013 at 11:31

Kinja'd!!!0

I have not seen any other issues with this new image service you guys are using. It's still fairly new (I assume), and it's bound to be tweaked several times, so never say never... :)

The only reason I'm even aware of this, is images stopped dropping from the site last while I was at work. I noticed the new URLs today as I posted one of my uploaded images to another website, and noticed OMG HUGE URL!

Unlike the cropping, inaccurate annotations, moving image upload pop-up, weird comment formatting, and other Kinja quirks, this one could be a game ender.

If I can't view images on these sites while at work, it really cuts down the usage and my interest in sharing my own content. I view these sites at home too, but it's not much of a community to me if I only check in for an hour or so.

I may be jumping the gun here, since I have not been at work since the 24th. I hope I'm wrong, but unless the kinja image links have chanced since then, my federal agency.gov network isn't going to stop filtering these URLs.

I'm curious how many other networks are keeping Cloudinary out because it's classified as a personal storage/cloud service.

I'd also be interested to see how many networks are affected. Once the holidays are wrapped up and everyone is back at work, maybe you could put a post on the front page asking if anyone else has the issue and flag me down.

Yeah, you're seeing those (in my reply) because they are coming straight from gawker. The ones in my original post, are using this i.kinja-image.com URL, which is routed through Cloudinary.

It's misleading. Cloudinary does not appear in the URLs It begins with i.kinja-image....

http://i.kinja-img.com

^^^^This is the root of the new image URL. Click on it, see where it takes you.

If you are seeing images, then you aren't having the issue.

W7x64 Chrome 31 32-bit, Firefox 26 32-bit, Nightly 29.0a1 64-bit updated daily, and IE11

I am shown the Cloudinary front page, I have three enabled Chrome extensions and they are passive. All my installed browsers redirect to Cloudinary's front page, what do I do?

Another curious thing is that in this post when the image is shown in a new tab or window it is the direct URL to the image content.

The management of the pictures posted by us is just pathetic, in Kinja. Apart from the absurd resizing in the front page, also the pictures inserted in the replies to our posts get uselessly resized: e.g. an image 640 px wide is reduced to less than half, and not even clicking on the reply will take it back to its original dimensions. So apart from losing the pleasure of enjoying a nice pic, we also lose all the details and the text in it becomes unreadable. This in a blog that lives on pictures by definition, is just and simply idiotic.

Kinja'd!!! Roberto G. > Ernie @ Kinja

Hi, Ernie.

The worst present issue about the pictures, is that the images we add to our replies get ridiculously resized and do not regain their original dimensions after the reply is clicked and enlarged. E.g. today I added this image (600 x 365) to a reply of mine:

Kinja'd!!!

On my image editor the words were perfectly readable without enlarging it. Once it was loaded in a reply to a post by someone else, it became totally useless, like you see it here. I do not think that this is correct! To paraphrase a popular ad by Lavazza, "a picture is a pleasure. If it's a bad picture, where is the pleasure?"

Would you please do a favor to all mankind? Fire whoever decided to resize even the SMALL pitures to "ku-medium.jpg". Resizing to the effin' Ku-medium a picture 640 pixels wide, is like slamming with a baseball bat a kid who's already dying of malnutrition. IMHO at least, it's like that.

I just wish they'd let you embed pictures rather than stuff being rehosted, that will allow me to post GIFs more easily. Trying to post a GIF to Kinja is an absolute pain, so much so that I've given up on T.GIF, because there's just so much effort, and T.GIF is my favourite post of the week.

Howdy VOX. The expand option is unfortunately not available in reply images. Coupled with our typical image transform rules (<640px is downsized to 300px, etc.) means what you're seeing in working as intended.

Kinja'd!!! Roberto G. > Ernie @ Kinja

Hi, Ernie! Happy New Year!

Pardon me but I need to insist, for the sake of logic: resizing a 640 px wide image to 300 px is the dumbest idea, after the microwaving of an egg. A 640 px image is already SMALL, and I made like that just not to overload your server. Resizing it to 300 px is like beating a dead horse, and what is the result of this? That from now on I'll only post in my replies images 1600 px wide or more, and I'll just see what happens. Whatever is the result, it cannot be worst than what you do to my small pictures. And your server's CPU will go VROOOOOOOM! ...is this what you want?

Kinja'd!!! Ernie @ Kinja > Roberto G.
01/02/2014 at 12:08

Kinja'd!!!0

Less than 640 is resized, 640 and above stays at 640. My reply is contingent upon the image you uploaded being 600 x 365. If it is actually 640 wide and uploaded small, that's a problem. If that's the case, could you host the image externally and send me a link to download?

Kinja'd!!! Roberto G. > Ernie @ Kinja
01/02/2014 at 12:25

Kinja'd!!!0

Ok, may be it was 600 px wide and not 640 px. But still, a server that automatically resizes the already small pictures doesn't make much sense to me.

Sorry on the late reply. Okay, so the next day after I posted that comment, images began to work again. It wasn't that I had no images on the Oppo front page, but clicking zoom on the images was keeping images the same sizes they were displayed in (that medium resize instead of showing the original). It was definitely if you guys made some changes I think, as everything is back to normal.

When I do open an image in a post in a new tab, it shows the medium resize, as it should, but the URL, is that normal? Like, this:

http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/19bawlvxnh…

I recall it being just the img.gawkerassets URL, but with medium.gif or similar at the end.

The service went 100% live sometime over the weekend. Even avatars are being funneled through it.

Amazing thing is, come Tuesday my network started allowing it through.

Hopefully, someone in charge will open it up for you.
